Laser wavelength, pulse timing, beam quality, spot and focus, power or pulse energy, repetition, scan speed, hatch, overlap, path, and part geometry jointly set optical coupling and the transient temperature-time-volume response; no single energy-density number describes the marking window.
Weak, gray, mottled, or inconsistent marks must be separated by symptom location and variation signature across material, formulation, dispersion, part, laser field, optics, tool, measurement, and time before additive loading or laser energy is changed.
Surface residue does not identify its source. Distinguish molecular migration, surface bloom, tooling plate-out, particulate transfer, and unrelated contamination with matched formulation controls, spatial and time-resolved evidence, deposit analysis, and recurrence testing.
Melting or reflow, charring or decomposition, warping, embrittlement, cracking, ablation, and surface damage have different thermal, chemical, mechanical, geometric, and process signatures; prevent them by defining a response-to-damage window and correcting the controlling source, material, path, or part boundary.
A laser-marking recipe does not transfer automatically from a natural resin to colored, filled, or recycled versions. Rebuild the unmarked optical baseline, delivered additive state, response and damage map, and end-use qualification with controlled formulation substitutions.
Durability depends on mark construction and exposure sequence. Separate bulk-formed contrast from coatings, printed layers, activated or plated features, then test adhesion only where an interface exists and track optical, geometric, surface, mechanical, and functional retention after controlled abrasion, chemical, UV, and weathering exposures.
An RFQ and laser-marking sample evaluation must define the required final-part function, host system, delivered laser state, method, and acceptance criteria before it compares a declared candidate set. It does not nominate a product, grade, or optical-property package for the application.
One successful laser setting does not define a process window. Design a blocked, randomized, replicated experiment that preserves delivered beam and formulation state, separates coupled factors, measures useful response and damage together, models interactions and uncertainty, and confirms a feasible region across parts, fields, lots, and tools.
A laser-additive dosage study must define the required final-part function, acceptance method, host system, process, and conditioning before it compares a declared candidate set. The study should identify the lowest confirmed range that meets the stated criteria without implying a product recommendation.
Laser-marking metrics are not interchangeable. Define marked and unmarked regions, spectral and color geometry, color-difference equation, edge and resolution rules, sampling hierarchy, uncertainty, and final-part acceptance before comparing formulations or grades.
Production qualification must cover the measurement system, incoming material and formulation state, calibrated laser and part process, representative lots, colors, tools, fields, and lines, simultaneous response and damage criteria, ongoing monitoring, and risk-based change control. A successful coupon or supplier conformance document is not production evidence.
