Jawaban singkat
Thickness, porosity, current-collector contact, and cell geometry are a single design problem. A thicker Ti4O7 electrode may add nominal area or residence time, but it can also add electronic path length, diffusion distance, pressure drop, gas retention, and current-distribution error. Select the geometry against a measured transport and resistance map, not by thickness alone.
Mechanism: four paths must remain continuous
A useful electrode maintains (1) an electronic path from Ti4O7 to the collector, (2) a liquid or reactant path to the active surface, (3) a product or gas-release path away from that surface, and (4) a current distribution compatible with the local reaction and lifetime boundary. Thickness changes every path. So do pore size, pore tortuosity, collector layout, the solution gap, manifolds, and the direction of flow.
| Design lever | Potential benefit | Coupled risk | Measurement to keep paired |
|---|---|---|---|
| Increase thickness | More material volume or internal surface opportunity. | Higher through-plane resistance, transport limitation, or uneven use through depth. | Through-plane resistance + transport or reaction profile. |
| Increase open porosity | Better access, gas release, and lower hydraulic resistance. | Less solid cross-section, weaker structure, and poorer contact continuity. | Porosity/pore distribution + resistance + strength. |
| Change collector location or attachment | Shorter electronic path and more uniform collection. | Contact corrosion, local stress, shading, or failed bonds. | Contact resistance map + aged adhesion/sectioning. |
| Reduce cell gap | Lower solution ohmic loss in a specified cell. | Gas blockage, shorting sensitivity, fouling, and tolerance stack-up. | Cell voltage + pressure/gas behavior + local current proxy. |
| Change flow path or manifold | Better residence-time or mass-transfer control. | Bypass channels, dead zones, nonuniform current, and scale-up mismatch. | Pressure drop + tracer or flow proxy + spatial response. |
Scale-up is a geometry change, not a simple area multiplication
Increasing electrode area changes collector path length, edge effects, inlet/outlet distribution, thermal behavior, assembly tolerances, and the probability of a defect. Preserve the local operating boundary when moving from a coupon to a larger module: define local and average current density, actual wetted area, contact layout, flow distribution, and the measurement positions used to decide pass/fail.
What published literature establishes—and does not establish
F3 and F4 provide ceramic processing and Ti4O7 conduction context; F7 is study-specific electrochemical context. They support treating geometry and microstructure as coupled variables. They do not establish a universal electrode thickness, pore volume, collector, gap, flow rate, current density, treatment result, or service life for an Aurexene material or customer cell.
Qualification plan
- Set a narrow geometry matrix: at minimum thickness, porosity route, collector attachment, and one cell/flow variable.
- Measure dry and wetted directional resistance, contact resistance, pressure drop, and a geometry-relevant transport or reaction response on identical test pieces.
- Inspect current distribution or use an appropriate proxy before and after the intended duty cycle; do not infer uniformity from average cell voltage alone.
- Section failures for contact loss, pore blockage, cracks, and chemical attack; compare inlet, middle, outlet, edge, and collector-adjacent regions where relevant.
