Selecting and Qualifying LaB6 Thermionic Cathodes

Select lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) thermionic cathodes by instrument compatibility, crystal and tip geometry, heater, vacuum, operating condition, beam evidence, useful life, and form-specific documentation.

Quick Answer

Select a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) cathode only after its crystal orientation, tip, mount, heater, dimensions, tolerances, vacuum window, and service procedure match the intended electron gun. Qualify the installed source with declared emission, delivered beam, stability, resolution, duty-cycle, and useful-life evidence.

Problem

A commercial LaB6 cathode is an equipment component, not an interchangeable bulk-material sample. Material identity and work function cannot establish gun compatibility, safe operation, beam quality, or lifetime.

Mechanism

Heating raises the electron energy distribution until electrons escape the emitter surface. Crystal orientation, tip geometry, surface condition, operating temperature, vacuum, bias, gun electrodes, and alignment determine how the intrinsic material response becomes a usable beam.

Tradeoff

A compatible LaB6 source can improve brightness and useful life relative to a conventional tungsten filament, while imposing tighter requirements on equipment compatibility, vacuum, heating, handling, alignment, maintenance, and cost. CeB6 and field-emission systems must be compared as complete source architectures.

Material Strategy

Keep cathode-grade evidence separate from optical nanoparticle evidence. Confirm the supplied cathode form, orientation, mount, tip, heater, tolerances, traceability, and document state before installation.

Qualification Evidence

  • Instrument, gun, mount, heater, orientation, tip, dimensions, tolerances, and service procedure.
  • Vacuum history, operating temperature, voltage, bias, alignment, warm-up, and contamination state.
  • Emission and delivered beam current, stability, resolution, duty cycle, useful life, and end-of-life rule.
  • Supplier TDS/SDS state, traceability, packaging, handling, and change-control information.
