Decision Summary

Screen ATO when the program needs a formulation-led conductive coating that also manages visible appearance or NIR attenuation. Screen ITO when the architecture is a deposited transparent electrode, or when an ITO slurry route is explicitly being qualified. ITO may serve as the transparent electrode or current collector in an electrochromic device, but it is not the electrochromic active switching layer. The decision still depends on substrate, binder or deposition process, film thickness, contacts, visible transmission, haze, color, durability, and the required electrical range.

Use this matrix to compare a coating-compatible ATO route with a form-specific ITO route. Treat ITO powder, ceramic target, slurry, and deposited film as separate qualification records: powder or target data cannot prove the optical or electrical performance of a finished film.

Stability

Compare environmental exposure, coating continuity, adhesion, and conductivity drift after aging rather than relying on powder properties alone. Request the same aging protocol for both candidates.

ATO is commonly evaluated for IR-shielding coatings and transparent conductive formulations. ITO is commonly evaluated for displays, touch panels, and transparent electrode stacks.
